The beginning of the 17th century was evidently a transition period in the history of music. The birth and rise of accompanied monody in Italy and its diffusion in the rest of Europe upset the very foundations of musical writing and opened the way to dramatic music. The Counter Reformation, extremely active in France and Italy in developping a devotional song capable of competing with current Protestant practices, favored the creation of a vast corpus using the same forms and the same artifices as in the repertoires of society, whether it concerned the air and the court ballet in France, or sung recitation and the opera in Italy. The program chosen by Faenza features Roman repertoire and proposes a beautiful glimpse of Italian devotional music in the first half of the 17th century.
